View Full Version : DB Dyno Day in Sept?
VSack

I noticed that there is a tenative dyno day in September. I'm new to the concept of group days, and I was wondering if this is just a pull and minor adjustment type of deal or if this would be a good time to have my car tuned. Otherwise, should I plan something on my own?
I have a SCT X2 that came with the car and has a 427RWHP street tune for no mods, but I'd rather have the pros do me right instead of trusting a tune I don't know.
The tuner is completely unlocked.
Thanks!

Typically it is 3 back to back to back pulls. No tuning in between (unless there is a problem that can be quickly addressed).
DB is the place for SCT tunes for sure.
I'd say get some baseline pulls and see if tuning is needed before planning a tuning session that will cost you at least $300.
I'd be up for the Sept Dyno day, but I don't know if we have firmed anything up with Danny at DB yet.

{Edit: Also keep in mind that DB requires you NOT be running Drag Radials on the rollers.
I currently couldn't meet that obligation right now, but maybe we can get the Tire Pimp to hook us up with a couple of used sets for the occassion??? I'd bring my floor jack and we can swap them in the lot before it's your turn up on the dyno.}

I apoligize about this, I spoke with Erica? awhile ago and we didn't set up any dates. If I recall she gave me a bunch of different dates and niether of us followed up on either side. IF you guys are thinking some time in Sept, give me a couple different dates and we'll see which ones will work out best for everyone.
We would be really excited about doing a Dyno day for you guys.
DRAG RADIALS: As alot of you know we can not run drag radials on our dyno do to the roller configuration and the dyno being a load dyno. They quickly heat up and turn gummy casuing low dyno readings. We have a couple of sets of 5 lug rims and tires that I use on a daily basis for dynoing. We are willing to let those be used as well as any others that people can come up with. So if you have the option and the ability to come to the dyno day with regular radials it will make everything go alot smoother.
Let me know about possible dates and I'll look at our sched and we'll get something set up.
Typically these dyno days are not for tuning. As Rod mentioned they are 3 back to back pulls with printouts. Making adjustments for people don't work well on dyno days like this. For any tuning questions give us a call and we can set up an appointment for tuning.
Thanks
Danny

Sounds awesome guys.
I'm in with or without a tune. To be honest, I'm pretty interested to see what kind of numbers the car is putting out.
Plus, this would be an excuse to get some other tires!

Make sure you have the right tires on for the Dyno. I know Danny is touchy about that and I would let him talk to you about that.

OK we are confirmed for Saturday, 9/19 at 10:30 AM. You'll get 3 pulls; if we have 9 or less cars the rate is $60. With 10 cars or more the rate drops to $50.
Remember, the September meeting has been moved one week earlier (9/12) to move cars for our 4th annual car show on 9/13. That means no other commitment for 9/19! If you have drags on your car, read Danny's post above!

After a gazillion dyno runs with various cars over the years, here are a few recommendations to "keep it safe" and to optimize your results.
Remember, your car is about to be flogged FLAT OUT... things can and sometimes do happen. Take the time to properly prep your car before the dyno run(s) to minimize the possibility of problems.
TIRES/WHEELS
1) STREET TIRES ONLY, NO DRAG RADIALS
2) Air up to manufacturer's specs (normally 35 to 40 lb)
3) Make sure the rear tires (assuming rear-wheel drive) are in good shape, no cords/belts showing, no checks or cracks in the sidewalls
4) If you will be changing wheels at the dyno location, be sure to remember your wheel-lock key (if applicable)
5) After changing wheels, make sure the lug nuts are torqued down properly.
FUEL
1) Make sure you have at least 1/4 tank of fuel
2) Make sure the fuel is of the proper octane level for your tune
3) Make sure the fuel is FRESH
ENGINE PREP
1) Make sure plugs are gapped properly
2) Make sure blower belt (if applicable) is snug but not overly tight and fully seated in all "grooved" pulleys
3) If the oil / filter have not been changed recently - CHANGE IT!
4) Make sure MAF / Intake tubes and clamps are all tight and solidly connected.
OTHER PREP
1) This is going to sound odd, but make sure the car is clean if you care about your paint. The guys in the shop are careful, but they will need to lean over the fender to get under the hood, even fender guards / blankets will grind any sand/gravel/particles on the car into the paint.
2) Video camera - this may be one of the few (possibly only) times you will ever get to hear your car at full song from OUTSIDE it.
The sound (particularly of a terminator or lightning) is something to experience.
Record it... you'll thank me later.
Record one run from back by the exhaust,
and one from up front by the blower... the whine up front when flat out is indescribable.
Lastly, prepare to be humbled... all those mods, all that money thrown at the car... should all add up to 500 horse right ???
Good luck, I hope you make it!
Rod

Wait, am I only supposed to dyno one wheel? :)
I can't wait. I have a rough idea what to expect but dynos are like paychecks: You always think you're going to get more than you really are.
I'm hoping to get a pulley and tune done prior, otherwise I'll be going as is and do the rest later.
And I DEFINITELY need to swap tires.

Add me to the list, if I can update membership and get activated. One event I can make this season. I just sold my 99 triple black vert,,, brought home an '03 triple black TERMINATOR with a few mods. Very curious to see what this thing is putting down. Sure is a hoot to drive!!,,, regardless of the dyno stats. Can't wipe the smile off my face.
I cancelled my appointment with Danny today once I found out there was a club event this soon. Seemed like a good chance to get a baseline before I have him work it over further,,, and meet a few HP freaks from the club.
Time is a little tight on Saturday, but I'm going to come up. Is this typically an all-day event or can a guy get in and out by mid afternoon?

Basic information is all logged, and Danny will be plugged into the OBD-II port during the dyno runs so he can monitor critical parameters and abort the run should something ugly appear. You can discuss what it is you want to monitor with him though and see what he has to say.
I'll bring my floor jack to the event to aid in swapping wheels/tires for the dyno runs.
If we could stagger the cars that require the "shop" wheels that would help greatly in timing. So we can get in/out of the dyno bay quickly for the DB guys. I'm more than willing to do some lug wrenching for people.

Sorry for all the folks who couldn't go :(
I did end up going and I had an absolute blast! As always everyone was friendly and the DB guys were awesome as usual.
My engine did not blow up, and it actually seems like its pretty strong for having so many miles on it.
Thanks to Rod for being the pit crew, and Misty for setting the whole thing up!

Well... my tune was stuck in the 91 octane mode, so I was only running 16* of timing up top (tune commanding 18* but due to IAT temps car was pulling timing). So... I topped out at 442hp/475ish tq. Air fuel stable at 11.5 across the board. 16# of boost at 4000rpm dropping to 11# by 6600.
Weren't planning to dyno the 91 tune, but as a result I know what I was running in Sturgis and likely all the other events this year as well.

Setup:
Bassani X Catback
Flowmaster Muffs
"Mystery" Tune
436RWHP / 405lbs
On third pull, we pulled the tune off the car and she still put down 418.6. This was on 93 octane and the car has 86k miles on it.
I was absolutely overjoyed to see how strong the engine is still performing. This is really a testament to how well done this block is.
