well i am going on a diet. I am way overweight. Before the "hot parts runner" days i was running 20 miles a week and weighed 190 now I am just about 240 again. Anyone have good weight loss suggestions or meals that actually taste good that wont make me fat!

maybe quit:drink: would be a good start!

Well, definately start working out again. That always helps. Don't go out to eat for lunch, eat good stuff like salads. Eat breakfast. Hey there is always the Subway diet. You could lose weight just likie Jared. hehehe

Hey Matt, check out

www.sshe.com

Its not exactly cheap, but its very convinient, and has provent itself very effective. Lots of diabetic patients use it.

My two cents worth....everything in moderation. Watch what you eat, portion sizes are the key. Exercise, even if its just taking a walk. Use the stairs rather than an elevator or escalator. People are way too lazy. Bring your lunch rather than going out, carry carrots, apples, etc. Watch the pop and alcohol, very high in calories. Again, just my opinion, but when you try to eliminate food items that sometimes doesn't work. It has to be a lifestyle change, not diet for a few weeks and then when you go off it people tend to gain the weight back. I'm no expert but I hate diets! Thats why I run.....

FOOD:
1. Eat a few small meals a day. If you are hungry, have a snack like some fruit or a granola bar. Don't just wait until it's mealtime because then you'll over eat. Remember to eat a variety of foods. The same goes for the opposite though...if you're not hungry when it's usually lunch time or supper time, don't eat just then. Eat when you're hungry.
2. Don't cut all of your carbs. Stay away from white breads, muffins, etc. They are simple carbs and not that great for you. Remember that alot of fruits and vegetables (including potatoes) also have carbs in them, but they're good carbs (complex carbohydrates). Pasta is a really good carb that does your body good and it doesn't have alot of crap in it like breads. Have a little pasta with some veggies and chicken. yum yum! I have a recipie for orange chicken if you want it. It's really easy to make and you can make it with fat free stuff.
3. If you plan on working out (which I hope you do), remember to include a significant amount of protien in your diet. Focus more on chicken and fish, while having red meat maybe 1-2 times per week, if that. Eggs are also a good source of protien--try egg whites and exclude the yolks (they have alot of cholesterol in them). Hard boiled eggs are a good way to eat egg whites.
4. Dont habit-eat. Some people automatically have to have something to eat when they watch tv, read, etc...if you find yourself doing that, STOP! Eat when you NEED to.

EXERCISE:
1. Start out slow...don't jump into it or you'll get sick of it and quit early.
2. Vary your workout. I.e. don't try to make yourself max out on weights every time or run a couple miles at a time. Get your butt to the gym and get a personal trainer if you can. They'll develop a good plan. If you can't get a trainer, go with something like this:
~stretch~ (calves, quads, hamstrings, shoulders, abs, sides, pecs, etc)
15-20 minutes of cardio, like running or elliptical machine
(3) sets of 10 crunches; (3) sets of 10 push-ups
Lift weights--work on biceps, triceps, pecs, trapezius (look up weight lifting exercies on the net or something)
10-20 more minutes of cardio (running, elliptical machine)

Swim if you can...it's a great cardio work out and it feels great

Exercising will also promote sleep and (oddly) make you crave healthier foods...when I'm done exercising, I always feel like an apple or something like that. And it's ok to do that...have a little healthy snack and alot of water after you exercise to replenish a bit of energy.
Hope all of this helps.
HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!!!
Heidi

Heidi, when I win the powerball you can be my personal trainer. Until then I cannot afford one and must take your free advice instead. It is very good! :rockit:

glad to be of service...if you have any questions about stuff, just ask :) I'm a biology major so I'm kind of a nerd about nutrition, muscles, and that kind of stuff.
