View Full Version : Open track in Iowa (Oct)

Cobra-R

We are trying to get a group together for a event at Mid America Motorplex in Oct. We need 20 cars and are hoping to get two days (You don't have to run both days). Typically they run two run groups, one advanced and one less advanced, so there would be tons of tracktime. Anyone here interested in coming? We are trying to get a feel for interest, if there is enough, we would call and get possible dates.
As I understand, instructors are available for these events.

Dan

We are just guaging interest at this point, as I understand it, we need 20 people. I'll keep you posted, if we can line something up and time it with CF, we'll do it.

I'm interested, in the beginner, far from "less advanced group". With instructor too, please. (If need be, I'd skip the drag race and go to this).

Thanks Brian!

I'd be up for this depending on a few factors (brake pads, a running winter car, which weekend, cost etc...)

So how much of a dirt road is this? Rocky, rough, pot holes? I hesitate taking my truck on dirt roads. And yeah, I grew up in the country on dirt roads, I can drive slow but I don't like them. Sounds like this is a 7 hour drive? I will probably pass and wait until next year...and the dirt road is making the decision easier, at least for me. :)

7 hours? who fed you that line of crap?;)

It's about 5 (much nicer drive than gingerman). The dirt road isn't bad, it's about 1/2 mile and pretty smooth.

Being that this thread was to determine the interest level within this group of a day of "Open Track" racing...

I would be interested as well.

If you want to go, go to the above link and register. We need 20 people to make it a go. The $ will be refunded if we fail to meet the numbers. If we get 20 for sat and not sun, then we will run sat only, you do not have to register for both days.

I should have mentioned that you guys missed a great time at MAM. The weather was great and we all got plenty of track time. Brian even got his first taste of "Off Track" time! ;)
The worst part was I have to replace my (new) tires and front rotors, but I guess that's all part of the sport. Thanks to Lew for lending me one of his tires to get home on!

It will be a long wait until next season. :(

Todd, it sounds like you had fun! I was gonna ask you how it was, I had read on SVT Perf that Brian and some fun off the track. Glad everyone returned home in once piece!

Are you going to replace your tires with the same kind?

It really was a lot of fun..... you should have been there! ;)

As far as the tires go, I am not so certain that I would get the same ones, Eagle F1 GS-D3's. They weren't cheap and I seemed to have better luck with my stock tires not wearing out so fast. On the other hand, I was driving the car pretty hard this time around the corners so maybe they held up great. They did keep me on the track..... just ask Brian! (I gave him a ride and made him a little nervous)

If I remember right, it happened in this order:

1. Brian went off the track
2. I gave Brian a frightening ride and stayed on the track
3. Brian went off the track

;) ;)

I had a blast as well. Todd did indeed make me a bit nervous in turn four that one time since it was my side that was so close to the edge of the track. He did a great job and my concern was not justified.

I did go off track two times from hitting other cars anti-freeze, it really was no bid deal and no harm done to the car nor the drivers underwear.

Todd,
You might want to consider Caster camber plates over the winter and put more negative camber in the front end. If I remember right, the outside edge of the tire was shot but the rest had alot of life left? If so, more neg camber will increase the tires contact patch with the track and give you better wear.

You are exactly right Brian. The outside edge is ripped up and the inside edge looks brand new. I thought about the caster/camber plates but I didn't know for sure if this would help, only because there were other things to consider. Such as, wrong tire pressure, not letting the tires heat up enough, cornering too fast which causes understeer, .... things like that. However, caster/camber plates have crossed my mind prior to this, and they sure as heck couldn't hurt. If I remember right, you liked the Maximum Motorsports brand correct?

Brian (or Todd or Doug, since I KNOW he'll chime in),

Why haven't I had this problem? Just not enough miles on my tires? What gives? (Besides the sidewall?)

Dan

Driving style, speed, and maybe the tire. Todd has done more events than you, so he is probly running harder. Given a few more events, you will see the same thing happen. The Eagle tires on your Cobra might be a better wearing tire that what Todd was running.

Brian

DNeinstadt

Fair enough. I still have some tread on my tires left, maybe Todd is running lower than I am. :)

Just wondered if it was a Cobra epidemic.
