View Full Version : Cedar Falls Flat Spot

some of you may have heard me complaining/bitching/whining/usingasanexcuse a flat spot at about 5200 - 5600 rpms in 3rd. Started thinking about it and decided to pull the plugs. They look great, although they are the original Motorcraft Platinums (10,000 miles). So I figure with the Underdrive pullies, CAI and Catback, the computer is probably causing the flat spot. I have seen this before in a couple of on line Dyno posts. Here's my Questions...
1. What plugs should I put in? I have heard autolite 745's gapped at 54. Any recommendations?
2. Gonna get it dyno tuned. Who, what, where and who all wants to go?
I like the idea of the Predator, so I can adjust for gears, offroad H etc. Not sure I trust myself to do it. However if I had some help (Dan N), this is probably the way I would go. Let me know what you think. Suggestions are greatly appreciated

I have heard good things about Denso's, and the new BRISK plugs. Not sure if that's only for supercharged applications or not but ??
As for dyno, when you want to go? I might be interested in dyno'ing one of my cars or so?
I'd help with the predator, I think I am comfortable with it enough to help.

 You can always rely on Dan to come through for you! Dan, where should I schedule the Dyno time? Second question is, have a favorite place that I should look to purchase a predator? Saw one on SVTP for $300, but it was bought before I could reply. Thirdly, How about in 2 weeks? Provided I can get the Predator by then...Let me know what day and time and I'll get it set up.

RJR is the place where we all usually get dynos done. I can schedule it with Mize and is best if we get 4 cars total for the night and pay cash. I imagine that Jeff may be interested if/when he gets his Predator back.
I would purchase a predator from RWTD. (Running with the devil). James is supposedly very good and will give free custom tunes. The disadvantage is that you must pay a higher price ($419). BUT anytime you change something, he can edit your tune. You can also find them used (I did) for $300 and get your own unlimited tunes later for $100. You can customize a little bit but to get completely dialed in, a custom tune is needed.
We'll wait, you get your predator. :)

Money is ready to go (just don't tell Chryse):secrets: How do I get ahold of James? And what is Running with the Devil (other than a Van Halen  song of course)? I have found a used one for $375, I'll see if he'll come down anymore on it...I still think we should do it in two weeks. If you want to Dan, start another post in the Clubhouse and let's get it scheduled. Any day except Monday works for me.

I'm blaming it on the car!

Rick,
I use Autolite 764's or 764P's (the P's are platinum). I like the 764's best, and they will fix any plug related problem with your motor. The Motorcrafts that come original are basically bad and subject to misfire. Gap the plugs at either 045 or 050, hasn't made much difference with mine. I did go down to 040 with the current set, and will be replacing them with new at 048 (split the difference). The autolites are less than $2 apiece, so you can afford to change them regularly.
It's an easy job - just make sure the engine is cold, use the antisieze compound, put dielectric jell on the boots, and DON'T overtighten. Sears sells a trick locking extension that make the job much simpler. I normally do it in about a half hour and take my time. Hand thread the plugs to start them.
Once you have the dyno tune with the A/F, you should be able to do any Predator tuning based on that initial data. Probably best to do another check if you make lots of adjustments over time, just to be sure where you are. I've seen them for $400 to $420 in several places.

The bottom bar for each post has a "Quote" button. Click on it and will open up the Post Reply page with that post.
