View Full Version : 3L SVT Contour

I finished up another 3L SVT Contour. Specs:
Black 1999 SVT Contour
2002 Ford Taurus 3L DOHC with 30k miles
3L cams and 3L oval port intakes
Aftermarket Short ram intake
Midnight blue interior
New clutch installed
Overall the car is in great shape. I still need to wax it up for some pictures but I don't think there are any major scraps or dents. Interior looks great. No rips or tears. There is no radio included.
Price: $6500
Thanks,
Chris

Very interested. Does the air work? How many miles on the body? Any problems you know of? Clean title? Vin for a carfax? Thanks!

Correction the car is a 1999. :) I just checked the title. The vin is: 1FAFP68G4XK164026. Title is clean. AC is cold. Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend to clean it up and wax it for some pictures.

If your looking for a SVT don't pass up the 3L. The stock engines are known to blow from oil starvation. I've done 14 of these now and all the original engines blew up from oil problems. The 3L does not have that problem and gives you a lot more power. Engine is brand new and will last very long just ask anyone on the board as there are 2 that bought from me who post here regularly. The last 3L dyno from one I built put out 195hp to the wheels. That's 235hp to the crank. A stock SVT puts out 165hp to the wheels or 200hp to the crank.
If you buy a stock one and plan on modding it you won't find a better mod than dropping a 3L into it and you'll end up paying much more than $6500 for the car in the end.

Oh I have no problem with the engine being a 3.0, that's a bonus. Just more worried about all the nickle dime stuff after 100k. Stuff like struts, balljoints, switchgear, blah blah blah.

You may want to ask Bruce (VNMUS) and Kyle (blackstang5.0) on the boards as all the ones I've built have normally been in the 90k+ range on the body. I haven't heard of any problems with them. I pulled the entire front suspension apart on this car and even dropped in a new clutch. Struts may have 93k on them but there was no wear problems and normally there isn't with these cars that I'm aware of. Just trying to get it sold I guess so if you are slightly interested come check it out. It's worth a drive.
Thanks,
Chris

What all gets replaced during the swap? Are the heads freshened up at all before putting on the new block? (n00b alert) Do these cars have timing belts or chains?

Mine has 100,000 on the clock now and its running great. Only thing major that ive had to do myself with the car is replace the brakes which is normal. Cant avoid that stuff. But had the car dyno'ed and it put down 178. This is because my car isnt tuned to remove the IMRC which really affects the HP since the 195hp one chris talked about had a tune to remove the IMRC since with the 3L they dont need that anymore.
I paid alittle more for mine the the rest because the front bumper had to be repainted and the windshield had to be replaced also. But i honestly drive my contour more then i do my mustang now just for the simple fact of gas milage and its just more comforatable to drive every day. Mustang is ment for weekends pretty much now.
But chris does awsome work on his contours.

The engine is completely new. Full long block including heads and intakes. These cars have timing chains (also new with the engine) which never require replacing that I'm aware of. The 3L is the same as the 2.5L only bored out. (24 valve, dual over head cam)

Ahhhh, I see. I was under the impression that the SVT heads were swapped onto the 3.0 block. Again, lack of research on my part. I'm going to talk to the wife tonight about it and based on the results of that, may contact you to come check it out. Thanks for answering my questions! :hooray:

There are different versions of 3L swaps you can do and the hybrid 3L swap uses the 2.5L SVT heads. It actually brings the oiling problem over to the new engine and moves the compression up to 11.2:1. I used to have that setup in my cougar but I switch to a full 3L like this SVT has because I was worried about the oiling problem. The issue is with the heads. The 3L heads have extra oiling passages to keep everything oiled properly. The recent dynos have shown that the 3L heads flow better anyway so there really is no reason to stick with the SVT heads.
BTW I just waxed the car up tonight. Exterior is in really good shape. I'll get pictures up tomorrow. I have someone coming to look at it tomorrow. :)

Unless you are specifically looking for something unique and fast this probably won't fit you. You could get a normal 5-speed contour for really cheap and they are great cars. Good luck on you car shopping.

As for the next one, did they make svt's in white? :)
Blackcoog
08-15-2006, 08:01 AM
They only made them in Red, Silver, and Black for 98-99 with midnight blue interior. In 2000 they also offered a Tropic Green which is nearly impossible to find as they only made 213 of them. The green only came with a tan leather interior. In 2000 the Black had the option for tan interior but the Silver did not. Also they had a half model year in 98 so there are early 98's and 98.5's. They switched to a stiffer suspension in the 98.5+ and nicer wheels.
You can always have one painted I guess...

When I bought my CSVT from Blackcoog I had no problem getting the bank to write the check. They don't care who is on the title as long as when you transfer it they are on the lien.

It's these damn Credit Unions. Use National Banks people! Chris your a cool guy and I'm sorry your credit union wouldn't give you the money for the car because my name wasn't on the title. I know they can as the last person had the same thing happen and the Credit Union called me and they said it was fine. Ryan has been looking at the car for a while now. He came through first so he gets it. I build these things fairly quick though and as I told you on the phone I can source one just for you if you'd like. I'm always looking for more so I'm sure I'll have another soon. As I said about 50 times I have no problem transfering the title but your bank will not give you a check unless they get the title. Since it takes so damn long to get the title transfered over here in MN that's pretty much not an option. I could care less about paying taxes on it and putting it in my name. If I turn it around in a weekend I'm kind of stuck until I get the title if I try and transfer so it made sense not to on this one.
Chris

08-16-2006, 03:58 PM
FYI Chris I just talked to Ryan's Credit Union and they verified the title some how and said everything was good to go. They even agreed that MN is horrible at transfering titles and they wrote a check out to me.
I'd call up your Credit Union and yell at them for not being able to verify the title wasn't duplicated or any issues with it.

It better be. That car has been great ever since the engine went in. Make sure when you get tires for that car that you get 215/50/16's which are the stock size. Those tires on there are too wide and a bit too tall. Also clean the air filter with a K&N filter cleaner kit. Those should help you get the best gas milage possible.

hey chris no i understand your position and why you didnt title it, it makes perfect sense. you just have to understand my frustration being that its not to common buying a vehicle in these terms. and i took your post as condesending while im frustratred trying to figure out how to make it work, but you sold it to someone else so it didnt matter any way. so just out of curiosity can you pm some prices? im curious to how much you pay for the taurus engines and how much you charge to do a job similar to the recent contour. and how you said most of the cars you do are 98's, i prefer and need at least 99, thats the oldest the bank will finance. id pay for it cash except all my money is going to my acura tl. and im going to be searching for other cars.

What was it Chris?
It was an axle problem. I didn't keep the CV joint coupler or metal housing with the new axle I picked up. I was running it with the coupler from the previous CV joint that was on the jackshaft. Turns out parts from one manufacturer to another can very quite a bit. The housing was slightly larger even though it looked exactly the same so the CV joint had back and forth movement creating a clicking noise and a vibration. I didn't know the cv housing came off the old jackshaft or I wouldn't have had this problem. The new jackshaft that came with the axle I bought was for an automatic which was 2 inches shorter and the splines were different or I would have just used the jackshaft that came with the outer axle. The CV joint axle attached to the jackshaft, which is what went bad originally, is the same from either an auto or manual. You can't pull it apart at the boot and slip it into a different housing though.

oh its got 26% window tint (illegal) on all 4 side windows and the rear. the interior is nice, no dash warp, no rips in seats. it needs a y pipe unless you like my super loud optimized one. im not really LOOKING to sell the car i love it way too much, i would just buy another one with a 3L in it, and maybe silver or green, i like those colors :)
