I can't be the only person suffering from excessive wheel hop. What have others done to control it?

Happens from standing start or accelerating while rolling.

switch to a solid axle rear end is one of the best things that you could do to get rid of it. Also there are some kits out there that are like $500 - $1000 that have all these new bushings and stuff like that, but a rear end swap with all needed parts you can usually do for like $900. If I do anything I will probably do the rear end swap.

Stay with the IRS. Sticky tires help big time. The only time I have wheel hop is with a lot of air in the tires and it is under 60 degrees. The stock tires are decent, but not when you start throwing HP at them.

go to SVTperformance.com and check out the new edge forum they have a sticky about IRS stuff you can do. At some point there they say that you will have the quarter capability of a solid axle and handle like a porsche.

There are guys running low 10's on the IRS and 6 speed with just upgraded half shafts and big sticky tires.

I bought the IRS brace in September. Do the half-shafts just slide out of the splines (like on my old SAAB turbo) or is the swap-out a big production...?

I would like to keep my IRS because it has more of a sports car feel - even though it is basically just a muscle car.

here is a write up. http://www.lx.net/jlynch/pumpkin.htm I understand it is fairly simple, although I haven't done one....yet.

Solid axles hop also so that not a cure.

The compliant lower control arm bushings are largely to blame for wheel hop. Before I took my car out to DB for the engine swap I put in poly IRS subframe bushings, delrin upper and lower control arm bushings, aluminum/delrin diff bushings, MJ's (now billetflow) diff brace, DSS lvl 5 halfshafts and H&R SS springs. A few weeks ago when I was breaking in clutch I had more than a few times where the tires broke lose from a stop and I had no hop with the stock rubber.

:smug:I ruined 2 pullers trying to pull the hub off just the pass side half shaft. I ended up having to put hub/knuckle in a vice and use an air hammer to drive it out. Other however have had em slide right out.

Thanks all for the response. I'll keep the IRS, but see where the rest of the options fall in the upgrade budget over the winter.

Let me do the math:
Cobra 6 Speeds, 155MPH Top end
Take away first gear and slow down, what am I left with:
A GT with an expensive price tag.

No fun in that.

155MPH Top end
What are you still doing with that limiter in place? :)

How do you remove it (can I do it with my Predator?) and (honestly) will they go much faster?

Aerodynamically these SN95 body mustangs seem to push a lot of air. What would the top speed be w/o the limiter?

I think this test was done a few years ago by Motor Trend? Shows 159 for the Terminator.

Sorry to whore-up this thread...

according to that it is using the governer. Without the governer you should be able to surpass that number. The question is how often do you reallt need to go faster then 150?

Sure, but did it solve your wheel hop problem?

C, I am a problem solver and I believe that, that is a cost effective way to fix the issue!! Thanks for playin..

Just went to the new North Branch library (WOW now I know where all my tax $'S are!) anyways went through the old Car & Driver mags and ran across the 1st ever mag with the 03 Cobra in it.. They tested the car and for the 1st time ever they gave a Ford a damn good write up!

O.K. here is the intersting facts from the mag.

#1 QUOTE this Cobra is the baddest (INCLUDING 00'S) on the planet.

#2 There are possibly only 2 American cars that can run with this thing! Z06, Viper!!

#3 John Colletti was Quoted as saying the car had a terminal speed of 175!!! That is right kiddies 175 bills for a Cobra!!

Now I can personally tell you I had mine going real close to 150 before I let of coming home from Thunder Bay last year and boy oh boy if that front end felt real light up there.. Couple more miles an hour and I would have been in the drink..

Anyways check out the C&D they really loved the car for the money!!

Actually you did not solve or fix the problem. The problem still exists.

Warren Lacina :splat2:Actually there was a cobra running a twin screw on stock engine that was lowered who was running the salt flats at 178(and still pulling) when he was told to shut it down. They didnt trust the stock cast aluminum wheels.

He went back the next year with a 302 stroker, same blower and some better wheels and was running at 203mph with room left in it. This was with just a tad over 600rwhp.

I can see a bone stock cobra hitting a wall at 160 but if you have any mods at all you will go faster. If your heavily modded and lowered you can go a lot faster.

heh, so that likely means I have a 200+mph car....I like the sound of that :)

I'll rent a radar gun if you want to try it. Maybe we can do it on I90, I don't think there is a bend in it till you hit Wyoming....

Someday though I would like to see what she can do :)
