View Full Version : Fall Cruise SVTOA-TC goes North

Where: Duluth, MN to Thunder Bay, ON,CA.

When: Saturday Oct 2nd & 3rd. Depart a Location to be Determined promptly at 9AM.

This can be either 2 day get away or long over night trip, members will choose what they prefer to do. Duluth is 167 Miles from American Ford in Bloomington. I will locate a host hotel in Duluth for Friday Night Oct 1st and a host hotel in Thunder Bay, ON, CA. Doing this allows members to make a choice on sleeping in Duluth on Friday night or departing the Twin Cities around 7:30 AM on Saturday Morning. For those who stay in Duluth on Friday night we can meet for late dinner at Mamas Grill and then either go to Casino that evening or retire early in preparation for the next day. The Group will meet and depart a location(To be determined later) at 9AM and proceed North on highway 61 towards Lutsen. Along the way we will stop at Gooseberry Falls, the lighthouse (Mind is blank for the name) and several other places for pictures and such. After we cross into Canada the drive is about 45 minutes to Thunder Bay. The group can check into their hotels or motels and meet for dinner and drinks at Montana Steak House. I called Montana's and they are willing to set a section of their parking lot for us if needed. The Days Inn is right next door to Montana's and the Manager of the Days Inn will give us a speacial rate depending on how many rooms we require. This is a very scenic drive and Im hoping that we wont be too late for the fall colors. Last year I made the drive with my girlfriend and we not only enjoyed the smell of pine in the air but we were treated to sightings of a Moose( Remember this Texasboy aint never seen one of those goofy things) as well a Bear and other usual creatures of the woods. On Sunday people can choose to depart as a group or sleep in and depart as they please. Its important to reply as soon as possible so I can get rooms blocked off and get group rates, I believe the Jacuzzi suites were in the area of $120CA and Regular King rooms were 100CA. Last year the food was priced similar to what you would find at a Outback or Champs but $1 CA is only .68 of a US $. The Beer is stronger and they even talk funny( Y'all prolly say that about me though)

We do say that about you, but it's because of the "Y'all" thing anyway. :)

I think I'm in for this, I have nothing planned for October except snow!

Um yeah speaking of that, it's not at all uncommon for them to get snow that far north that time of year...

I'd think that when you see a Cobra coming over the hill behind you and hear the blower winding up with the engine reving... <heh> That might help to motivate you to run a little faster too :) (Absolutely kidding).

Back on topic: I'm liking the idea of the "North Cruise".

I will update it on my flyer calendar. It was previously NOT listed. The October cruise up north was Dan/Shan's cruise from last year.

It's not even the same thing. Your cruise ends where this one starts. (this cruise goes from duluth to thunder bay).

BTW there's 6 car club cruises I know of for that weekend, and I guarantee yours isn't the 1st one. (One being nearly 20 years old)

I'd been on the fence about this, but I realized yesterday that I can't do the trip, because I'll be taping the last race of the year at Raceway Park, to be aired on Speed Channel. I'll take fame and fortune over a drive in the country any day!

I hope y'all have fun!

Like Doug said your starts where it ends and ours actually has a start and a end, your site and its members are very different, lets not compare the two.

Here's my take on this b.c thingy I don't think I know where mine is either so if we get the run around at the boarder we can do 1 of 2 things. Either we can all bend over and the board patrol can kiss our sweet american asses or we can run back down to silver bay or eiffie and get a room there right on the lake. Good stuff well mke it work.

DirtyM
09-22-2004, 08:08 AM
When I went to Canada about 5 years ago, we needed a birth certificate then. Atleast, we brought them with us. I don't really remember if they used it or not. I"ve heard that since 9-11 they've been pretty strict about the rules. Passports will work just fine. Otherwise, finding your bc is probably a good idea.

Steelgrave
09-22-2004, 08:20 AM

BC and a photo ID will get you by, unless your kewl like me and have a passport

I just might make it on this trip, I have a friend that lives in duluth that im sure will let me crash at his place. But yet, getting the hotel room would be a blast as well.

I'll have a chat w/ the woman im dateing, and see if she'll want to come as well to this. She knows about the down time at the Ford plant, and is iching to get out of town for a while.

I just got back from Canada late last night. I didnt need a Birth Certificate to get out or back into the United States. As a matter of fact, nobody ever asked for any sort of ID the entire time I was there. I found lots of places to go and lots of places to see, in the last 4 days I have prolly hiked over 30 miles, I have alot of really cool pictures that I will post in another thread. The colors were just starting near Duluth, they were peak near Lutsen and just starting in the Thunder Bay area.

Last I heard it doesn't take 3.5 hours to get to Duluth!!! WTF? That's EARLY. John wants us to meet at 9AM.....

Dan

John M
09-26-2004, 04:25 PM
Please everybody be filled up and blatters emptied by 9AM, the group can depart the parking lot across from Grandmas at that time. That gives us 10 hours of daylight to cruise up towards Thunderbay and check out the parks and the sights. The minute you cross into Canada you jump to Eastern Standard Time so we will lose 1 hour on the way up. Not a big deal except for the fact that we might be eating dinner at 10PM Canuck time.

I also called my insurance to verify coverage once we are in Canada, All MN/WI insurance policies will cover you into Canada, the only difference is the card you carry for proof of insurance is different than the card you carry here in the States(Just read mine and looks the same, except that its in both English and French). That card is no big deal unless you plan on getting a ticket, otherwise nobody will be asking for proof of insurance. My insurance company emailed me the card I will need, you guys might wanna check and see if you can do the same. The Speed limit in Canada from the border to Thunder Bay is 90km(60 MPH) and the drive from Duluth to Thunderbay is around 4.5 hours not including stops.

Well Director meany if you would have seen my post it said that these plans are not set in stone!!!!!!!!!! DA. So in response to Johns post I have revised my plans for saturday morning, I am leaving my house at 6:45 sharp whoever wants to tag along on the ride can meet at my place at 6:30 a.m. There will be many oppertunities to stop and do whatever on the way up but can't stall to much. It should only take about 1hr 45mins to get to our destination on time minus stops, of course. So for the people that want to go with me on sat. please pm me and I will give you directions and such that you will need to find my place. See you saturday.
