Due to my ibook melting in the fire last spring, I am on the hunt for a new Apple computer. I am a graphic designer, so a Mac is a must.

I don't know how many people will be able to answer these questions, but what kind of speed, memory, etc. should I look for? :uhoh:

I'm leaning more towards a laptop for its portability, but if I have to get a desktop, its not a problem. I do a lot of graphic work with Photoshop and Illustrator and will probably be working on website design as well. Everything that a graphic designer needs.

Can anyone recommend anything?

And don't tell me to get a PC. Thats not an option.

are they still in business? J/K The guy that did the logo I showed you is using a Mac G4 Titanium (?) model on OS10. Go to the Mall of America and visit the Mac/apple store. They are very friendly in there and I'm sure will give you good advice.

I'm inclined to just recommend, "Buy the biggest one you can get for the money." Especially if it's going to be a desktop/laptop dual duty type of system.

But if you're going to sacrifice, I'd cut down on CPU speed and seriously consider getting loads of memory. OS/X can use the upped memory productively and all the applications you run will be memory intensive.

I have a Mac Mini, it has the Super Drive and I added 1gb of memory. Grant it, it is not a laptop but it is a lot of bang for the dollars. Go to MOA and look at the apple store before buying.

Purchased PhotoShop CS2 a month ago and learning to use it.

I'm with Ducky on this. Get the most you can for what you want to spend. Check out the store at the MOA.

I think you are talking about a G4 Quicksilver. It's basically a little slower then the single processor G5's.

I'd get a MINIMUM of 1gb of ram. Otherwise get as much as you can afford. You are like me, eventually you will use it.

ha ha, found this funny this morning. I usually try to get a little less than I can for more than I want to spend. :googleeye

This is the problem. I"m not sure what I want to spend. I'm basically trying to figure out what I must have, then see how much its going to cost me. I just don't want to end up with stuff I won't need.

The memory I know I will use, its the speed that I don't really know about. You can upgrade memory in any system, I'm trying to figure out the speed I should get.

I plan on going to the Apple store at Rosedale. Or a few other stores. I've checked with some people I work with and they bought theirs at CompUSA.

Get the fastest you can. That way you keep software bloat at bay, maximizing time til the next upgrade/purchase. MHO.

I've found CompUSA's Apple support to be relatively wimpy. IMHBAO, a better alternative would be MicroCenter (http://microcenter.com/at_the_stores/st_louis_park.html).
