I hope Shandiea or Shawn Eagan is watching this.

Dave - why selling?

Dan,

It's out for the repairs and I thought I might want to try a new SLP version that doesn't transmit the noise into the passenger compartment.

BTW - the correct phone number is 612-280-5035 (Sorry about that!!!!)

Darn it Dave, have one showing up on Thursday. Wish I had known...let me know if you want to separate that handle (MGW)...
Repairs? What Repairs? TSB?

The good news is I only paid $140 shipped for the triax.

Rick,

I started following up on the TSB thing, and Steve at American acknowledged that the 1-2 shift thing was covered by some sort of TSB and that replacing shift forks and synchros was the remedy.

To be safe, I took the TriAx out and put the stock shifter back in - guess what. The problem suddenly vanished and has been gone for five days now. I took the car in anyway and explained the situation to Brian the S/A and to Steve. Steve drove the car - confirmed that the shift thing didn't appear to be there, but decided the car needed a clutch and throwout bearing. They ordered the parts and the new clutch should go in this week.

In the meantime, I decided to sell the TriAx and try the new shifter from SLP. It is supposed to be better on throws, lower noise than the TriAx and it has an isolated handle. It's only $117 direct from SLP.

I'm still trying to get to the bottom of the TSB thing, since the shift fork/synchro thing is over a year old. Obviously it's not the mysterious "new" TSB re: the Tremec 3650.

Having the problem go away still baffles me, but I suspect it will be back and the car is covered for another 40K miles under warranty (I checked that out with the S/A!!!).

See you guys on Saturday. If I don't get a nibble on the TriAx pretty quick, I'll work something out on the MGW. I still have the Steeda handle anyway.

Dave I havent ever seen a Tri-Ax for the 3650, Although I have used a TriAx in T45 and TKO. Were your positive stops adjusted correctly ? It sounds like the stops were preventing it from engaging 100% of the time.

John,

Yep - the stops were set correctly (up to contact and back 1/4 turn) - I checked and had clearance when engaged in all gears. The thing was in for nearly 28,000 miles - I was surprised to see the difference when I took it out.

As I said, it does seem to engage the pivot ball/bushing more tightly than the stock shifter. Don't know if that has anything to do with the noise problem, and I sure don't see how it could affect the 1-2 or 2-3 shifting "clash".

I'm gonna try the new SLP shifter, as it is based on a TREMEC base and an isolated handle. Just have to see how it works out I guess.

I am fascinated by some of the web threads that are beginning to allude to clutch problems possibly being related to the gear clashing. I noticed that if I tried different clutch techniques, I could affect the degree to which the clash occurred. However, when the clashing was bad, it was really bad. Nothing seemed to help, but it never seems to have gone beyond being noisy - no further transmission problems or consistent progression of the noise problem. It was always sort of random, although worse when cold. This tranny has had the fluid changed to GM Synchro and had the fill level adjusted per the latest recommended practice.

dave, thanks for the good deal on the shifter. put it in tonight, big improvement. took about an hour and 3 bandaids, but well worth it.

Installed mine also. on a scale of 1 - 10 I'll give it a 7. Firmer shifts, and very precise, but kinda notchy. The handle rocks though Dave! Didn't use the sound deadening material yet. wanted to see how loud without it. So far, not much difference...
