I was driving down University on my way home from the GFs to get back to school when I pulled up next to a grand national at a light he went wild on his throttle and was all set to race I just looked at him gave him a thumbs up and shook my head knowing I wouldnt be much of a race for him. He laughed and gave me a thumbs up and slowly cruised off. Man those things are mean. To make my self feel a little better a little later I lined up against an Evo 8, we were both about to get on an entrance ramp for the freeway. the light turned green and we both let it go. I love hearing those things spool up. we both let off at 65(the legal limit) as we entered the freeway, and it was a pretty dead even race, if I wouldnt have let off I might have taken him, however ramp coming to an end I wasnt going to try it.

Brian, what do you mean you wouldn't race the GN? I know they are quick also but that was 1987 quick not 2001 quick. You should have smoked a STOCK GN. They are mid 14 quarters and if I am correct 0 to 6 somewhere in the low 5 sec range..

Those mag times were a little slow. Bad Drivers. In 1987 a mag raced a Gn vs a 5.0lx. neck and neck, stock tires. the Lx won with a 13.99. We find out at the end the 5.0 was running 273 gears. I hung with or beat Gn's with my high 13 sec 89. Any Good running cobra will beat a GN. However gn do go very well for a heavy 6cylauto.

Oh ya GN'S fly for a boat on wheels. Would love to have 1 to add to my collection of goodies. I also thought that those #'S seemed a bit low.

A Grand National is far from a boat on wheels, granted it won't stop or turn like a Cobra but if you run across one that looks and sounds stock you better still watch out.

Those cars can be extremely deceiving, it can appear totally stock and be an easy 11 second car. They are also all automatics so they are easier to launch.

I would never underestimate a Grand National unless it is a total rat and even then you never know.

For the record I LOVE G.N's but they are nothing more than a 4 wheel pontoon.. Believe me my buddy has the cleanest 87 you will ever find, and he will tell you the same thing.

But maybe that is because he runs a 69 Chevelle LS6 that would put a hurtin on most anything that I can think of!

A stone stock Grand National is a fairly respectable car, a well prepped one is very respectable and a full blown Super stock car is insane.

The all time NHRA SSDX Super Stock record is held by a Grand National, 7.98 @167.44.

http://www.bgnra.org/fast_cars.htm

I have an article from one of my old magazines of an '86 GN with only a fresh air intake, superchip and 10 in slicks running consistent 11's, That is a fact.

Autoweek titled their first full test of an '86 GN " Sideways at any speed ".

I guess what we mean when we call it a boat on wheels is how big the car is not exactally how fast it does or does not go.. I know how fast you CAN make a g.n. or it's bigger and much quicker older brother the g.n.x. but that does not change the fact that they are big cars...

I actually have a soft spot for the big performance type car.. I.E.
G.N.
90's Impala SS
03 Marauder's

are a few of my all time fav's..

Not to whip a dead horse but the GN weighed between 3300 and 3500 pounds depending on options and an '04 Mustang weighs 3400 pounds.

The GN has a 108" wheelbase and the Mustang is 101" so yes a Mustang is smaller but smaller and lighter don't always go together and in drag racing it's all about weight.

I had a big block '69 skylark that weighed 3400 pounds WITH me in it, yes the car was missing a few options like the entire heating and air conditioning system, windshield wipers, radio, carpet, insulation, power steering and power brakes.

Made for a nice power to weight ratio though.

The spec I found for the Cobra weight actually seemed a little low to me and it did'nt specify which model that weight applied to so I am just giving the Mustang the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone here had their Cobra on a scale?

My fully loaded all leather, Dohc 04Mach1, weighed 3340 with 1/2 tank of gas. street trim, 100% stock. Race track weight, 3170. Without me, of course. 200+pounds more for an 03-04 Cobra for sure. 3600 I guess. It will kill a stock GN. no offense. 86-87 Gn's the fastest years. low 14's stock. Good for it's day. A good race for a stock 99-04 Mustang Gt. I like those cars btw. Black and mean. Much nicer than It's sled cousin the monte carlo ss. 170 hp, low 16/high 15's.

Hay you for got about the Gutlass!!! I believe Hurst did a car for them for a few years, and pontiac ran a car car the Formula 2+2 with a funny back window... Do you remember any of those uni bodies??

Grenade
05-07-2005, 11:38 AM
Yes. they were 5.0L, But the Hurst had a 307, and the chev had a 305. Some had nascar rear windows. About as fast as my 88 5.0L t-bird I had. Maybe a little slower. My t-bird ran a 15.8@85. Slower than the Sho I've got now.

Nobody said a stock GN was a match for a Terminator Cobra, A stock GN has skinny sad little tires on it compared to the Cobra and gives away a huge horsepower advantage to the Cobra.

My point is that like a lot of the Cobras out there many of the GN's running around are not stock and a modded GN can be a very very quick car and a modded GN will probably not be as obvious as a modded Cobra, soundwise I mean.

Also, everything I find puts the GN at about a 13.85 stone stock, the fastest version was actually the GNX which ran in the low 13's and supposedly could dip into the high 12's with perfect conditions.

Grenade
05-10-2005, 07:50 PM
I have never seen a stone stock gn run a 13.85. mostly 14.0-14.3. However I am willing to learn. Please tell me what article has the 13.85, and the gnx in the 12's. Thanks. Btw, I do like those cars.

I am not trying to sound bad but low 13's or even a 12 for the GNX is oftly fast for even that bad boy! That car was only slightly different from the G.N. and to pick up almost a second takes a hell of alot more than what they put in it... STILL I LOVE THIS THREAD AND LOVE THE UNIBOBY EVEN MORE.... keep it coming!

Not after that comment, you find me where a STOCK T-Type can run a low 12 or better yet a high 11 1/4 mile time and I will consider killing off this thread.. The T-Type was only slightly quiker then the G.N. based soley on the weight difference between the 2 cars... I CAN ASSURE YOU AND ALL OF THE OTHER 03 04 COBRA OWNERS OUT THERE THAT "NO" 86 OR 87 REGAL T- TYPE BONE STOCK WILL EAT YOUR LUNCH!!!!!

O.K. I dug out a couple old articles and found some test times.

Stone stock '86 GN-14.3, keep in mind thats on 215/65-15's
Stone stock GNX- 13.7, on 255/50-16's

1986 GN with 9 inch slicks, aftermarket chip and a fresh air intake 12.70, still running stock 3.42 gears. This was from an old article out of Cars Illustrated.

A stock GN was only rated at 235 hp and a the GNX was quoted between 280-300 and I found quotes of between 3100 lbs (T-type) to 3550 lbs (GNX).

Look at the stock tire sizes, My Focus has more rubber under it than those things had.

Believe it or not, the Mach ain't goin to be modded much more. Unless I add a power adder, it's not going to run much faster than a mid 12. Maybe some slight exterior visual tweakes. Tint, etc.. It's not a race car. I like the all around package. I will sell it if a new Mustang comes out, that I can afford, and that I like more. I.e new Mach, Boss, GT350. Something like that. I can't afford a GT500.
